The SIX Secrets to Successful Veneers
SECRET #1: Translucency is key.
Teeth are like glass, with a translucent quality that makes them look natural. Many veneers I see look opaque and that is one of the biggest tip offs that the teeth look fake and not like natural teeth. Make sure your veneers have this same translucent property, rather than appearing opaque.
SECRET #2: Length matters.
Everyone’s teeth show when they smile but to make teeth really look their best they must show to someone when you are talking. When you speak, your upper front teeth should be visible - not the tongue or an unflattering dark hole. This creates a youthful, healthy appearance and helps your teeth look their best.
SECRET #3: Choose the right shade.
Pick a shade that is age appropriate and in sync with the tones of the skin. A patient is entitled to ask for the “whitest shade” if they want but successful veneers (to me) are ones where a person won’t even know they are veneers. If you do them well a friend or family member may not even know you just got veneers but instead they will just notice that you “look better”. You don’t want your veneers to scream.
SECRET #4: Protect your veneers with proper bite alignment.
To ensure that your veneers last a lifetime, make sure to eliminate any unwanted forces on them. This includes understanding the proper bite and protecting your teeth from grinding at night.
SECRET #5: The contours and shapes of your veneers should be customized to your unique features.
A shape and contour of a tooth for an 22 year old woman will not be the same shape and contour as for a 46 year old man. The face, lips, gender, and body size may all influence the contour and shape of the teeth.
SECRET #6: Don't skip the temporaries.
Use temporaries to get a model of the veneers you want, and make sure you can satisfy the patient before moving on to the final porcelain veneers. The temporary process allows the lab to know exactly what you want with each and every case. Every case is unique, so trust a specialist who will take the time to get it right.
